Monofilament doesn"t have a set expiration date, and replacement frequency depends on how you use it. For example, heavily used lines, like those for deep water drops, experience more wear and tear. Replacing them every 1.5 years is a good rule of thumb.

Rough conditions like strong currents, heavy winds, or battling large fish can damage your line. If you encounter these, cut about 8 inches above any damaged areas to ensure optimal performance. 

Regularly inspect your monofilament fishing line for signs of weakness or damage, like nicks, frays, or fading colour. Forming a routine helps you ensure your gear always performs well in casting accuracy, strength, and overall reliability. 

Clear monofilament is generally preferred as it doesn"t contain impurities that could interfere with its molecular structure. However, in certain conditions, coloured lines can be advantageous.

For example, green nylon fishing lines may blend well with vegetation or water with a greenish tint. Bright or fluorescent colours can improve line visibility for anglers, especially in low-light conditions or at night, helping them detect subtle bites or manage lines. 

Ultimately, a colour choice often comes down to angler preference and confidence.

• Before casting, stretch your line to remove any unwanted coils or twists that might hinder your performance. 
• Avoid leaving your gear in direct sunlight or hot cars for extended periods, as excessive heat can weaken your trusty mono. 
• After saltwater fishing, give your reel and line a good rinse with fresh water to remove salt buildup that can cause corrosion. 
• Use knots designed for mono to ensure optimal strength and lubricate them before tightening to minimise friction and heat damage. 
• Store your monofilament fishing line on a large arbour reel to prevent "line memory", pesky coils that form during storage. This makes for smoother casting when you hit the water.
